Bennetts bereavement support groups

Although we have been helping bereaved families since 1891, we have of late been aware of the need that these families need support.  Whereas sadly it used to be more of a stiff upper lip and get on with it attitude, thankfully times have changed and support is there for those who wish to accept it.

Bereavement Support Group

The Bereavement Support Group was formed in January 2007, and has gone from strength to strength.  There are no trained counsellors at the group, just people of all ages, in a likewise situation helping and supporting each other, everyone is made to feel very welcome.

The group meets between 1.30pm and 3.30pm every second Wednesday of the month at St Georges Church Hall, Costead Manor Road, Pilgrims Hatch, Brentwood, Essex. Tea and biscuits are served by members of the group (the cost is sponsored by Bennetts) and some members bring in extra cakes and treats they have made themselves.

Our members are all ages, some have lost partners and some have lost siblings, friends or children.

There are no trained counsellors at the group, just people in a likewise situation helping and supporting each other, however Bennett’s Staff are on hand should anyone feel the need to talk on a one to one basis.

Everyone is welcome, new members are warmly received and armed with a cup of tea soon get chatting to the other people there.

We also organise day/evening trips to various places of interest, last year we went on different theatre trips, to RHS Wisley, on the Bluebell Line Railway and to Bletchley Park. So far this year we have been to ‘Loose Women’ at the television studios and to an Evening of Swing at Cliffs Pavillion. Further visits are planned to Suffolk Show, Beth Chatto’s garden and Dover Castle with theatre trips in between. We have a day planned to the Olympic site for a walking tour and lunch.

Some of the members meet up outside of the group, going out in the evening with a diners club, again formed by themselves and organised by Helen, a former member.

Members are keen not just to exercise their minds, but also (gently!) their bodies, as members are commencing a six week yoga course, arranged through the group.  They are a wonderful, caring group of people, all of whom are suffering a loss but they all come together to support each other when they have difficult times. There is no formula to why the group works so well, it just does.

Brentwood Bereaved Parents Support Group

The Brentwood Bereaved Parents Support Group started in June 2011 following a call from a lady whose children had died.  Several families who we knew had lost children were contacted to establish if they too were interested in meeting others who had also lost children, in order that they would be able to share their experiences, and in doing so help and support one another.  Since the first meeting we have not publicised this group or actively sought any other parents to come along, however, this small group feel that encouraging others to come along could benefit those who already attend together with any who may wish to join.

It must be emphasised that this is not a counselling group, however by the fact that everyday issues are being discussed and that topics are being suggested for discussion means that the support within the group is of immense importance.  There may be times during the sessions when you do not want to talk, or feel too sad to talk, when you may just sit and cry, there will be other times though when you feel like talking, laughing too.  Everyone who attends will have the same bond and will understand, there is no pressure from anyone, simply the facility to share.

The group usually meet on the first Monday of the month between 7-9pm in Brentwood.  There is ample parking and is just a few minutes walk from Brentwood High Street if you need to use public transport.  The cost of the hall and refreshments is paid for by Bennetts Funeral Directors who also attend to any administration costs.

If you are interested in coming along, or know someone who may be interested please call Bennetts Funeral Directors for more information on 01277 210104

“I joined the group in Feb 08 after losing my husband in Dec 07 after 9 months of long illness. I was feeling very lost. I went to the first meeting expecting doom and gloom, instead I found a group of people from all walks of life and all ages. Everyone was in the the same situation as myself which seemed to help. We now meet socially and have trips out and most importantly for me chat about the everyday things. But if you have a bad day, as we all do, the support is tremendous. What does the group mean to me? Everything. Thank you all.”
