After the loss of a loved one, we all need a support system to help us, as we move through our grief journey. While family and friends are vital, unless they have experienced a close personal loss, they may not fully “get it.” This is where our two support groups can become valuable resources.

“New Era” bereavement support group

A wonderfully supportive and friendly group that was formed in 2007, the New Era Bereavement Support Group consists of people of all ages who are living life after the loss of someone very close to them, a child, a partner, a sibling, or a friend. Supporting one another through a difficult time.

This very special grief support group offers:

  • Companionship and understanding from others who are also living life after loss.
  • The opportunity to talk to someone on a one-to-one basis.
  • Coping skills to help you through the most difficult days of your grief journey.
  • A chance to begin the healing process by sharing your own story and hearing the stories of others.
  • Permission to grieve and permission to live a happy productive life.
  • Optional social days and evenings out, visiting various places of interest, such as the theatre, gardens, and stately homes.

Situated in Brentwood, you will be warmly welcomed, between 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm, on every second Wednesday of the month.

Often it is very difficult to walk through the door to somewhere new especially with people you may not know; you’re welcome to bring a friend with you.  We can assure you of a sincere welcome by folk who truly understand, we offer refreshments and time to talk to new friends.

“Our Grieving Hearts” support group for bereaved parents

Specifically for parents who have lost a child, the “Our Grieving Hearts” grief support group” was formed in 2011. It gives all those attending the opportunity to meet with other parents who have experienced the heartbreaking and devastating trauma of losing a child of any age.

This immensely important grief support group for bereaved parents offers

  • Meeting with other parents who share the same bond and can relate to how you feel.
  • The opportunity, through talking, to try and make sense of what has happened.
  • Coping skills to help deal with the often irrational feelings of guilt.
  • The understanding that there is no set time or right or wrong way to deal with how you grieve.
  • The opportunity to talk to someone on a one-to-one basis.
  • A chance to begin the healing process by sharing stories and memories.

Based in Brentwood, this caring group usually meets every first Monday of the month between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm.

Our grieving hearts links with butterfly meadow

As The Compassionate Friends marked its 50th anniversary in 2019 Our Grieving Hearts were excited to have been given this commemorative garden which is being restored to a place of natural beauty. Butterfly Meadow is situated behind St. Mary the Virgin churchyard in Shenfield. It is the perfect destination for a walk to enjoy the wildflowers, butterflies, and minibeasts that live in the meadow. It’s a dog-friendly meadow where you can sit and enjoy the peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of life.

We are grateful to Essex Wildlife Trust (John McLaughlin), the Parish of St. Mary the Virgin (Linda and Alan Ward, and the legendary Bill Hindley). Bennetts Funeral Directors and Brentwood Council (Cllr Chris Hossack, Leader of The Council) for this wonderful space.
