The Beth Chatto Gardens
We set off on a rainy morning from Brentwood, the rain cleared as we approached the garden, however as soon as we went in, the heavens opened again – the tea house however was very good. The skies cleared enough for us to enjoy a lovely walk around the garden and home of Beth Chatto, where she has been for over 50 years creating a wonderful garden out of nothing.
The gardens began in 1960 when the site was an overgrown wasteland between two farms. Beth and her late husband Andrew set out to find homes for many plants they wished to grow, having dry and damp soil, in sun and shade they have been able to produce a wonderful ‘Ecological Garden’ as it is known today. After more rain, more tea and a fair array of plants, we returned to Brentwood and the Sun. Never mind us gardeners are used to the rain.
