Memorial Stone Masons for Granite Headstones, Gravestones & Plaques in Essex

Bennetts Funerals, monumental stone masons of Essex, craft both traditional and modern memorial masonry, granite headstones, gravestones and memorial plaques. A memorial plaque, gravestone or headstone is a lasting tribute to a loved one. It is important, therefore, that you choose a reputable monumental stone mason to undertake the commission and that before making any decisions, you are fully informed of the various factors that might affect your choice.

It is not advisable to erect a gravestone or headstone until at least six months after the burial as this allows the ground to settle. The six month rule does not apply to cremation memorial plaques or vases.  Both the stone masons design of the memorial and the material from which it is made will be governed by the regulations which apply to the churchyard or cemetery in which it is to be placed.

If the gravestone or headstone is to be place in a public cemetery the local council may have provided you with an outline of the regulations. If not we will be able to advise you. However, if the gravestone is to be placed in a churchyard some general rules apply for instance, Marble and polished granite are not allowed. Our stonemasonry memorials are specifically designed with churchyard regulations in mind. Again, Bennetts Funeral Directors and Undertakers of Essex will be able to advise you in each specific case.

There are no set rules as to what the inscription on the memorial should be, however for memorials in churchyards it is suggested that the inscription is simple, dignified and reverent. Our skilled monumental stonemasons will be able to reproduce almost any design you wish, according to the stone you choose, to produce a truly unique memorial headstone, gravestone or plaque.

You might also wish to consider how much time you will be able to devote to looking after the memorial. Some types of stone are harder wearing or easier to clean than others. For example a memorial headstone or gravestone made from polished granite can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. A marble memorial may in time require special treatment to restore it to its full glory.

when you have made your decision,  and a memorial gravestone, headstone or plaque has been chosen we will apply to the church or cemetery authorities on your behalf, for permission to erect the stone on the grave (a fee is usually paid to the authorities at this time). Bennetts Funeral Directors of Essex will ensure that the headstone is properly erected on a concrete foundation with due care and dignity and respect to the person it commemorates.
