What to expect on your first meeting with your local funeral home in Essex.

It all begins with your local Essex funeral home.

Every burial involves more than 1,000 decisions that have to be made by the organiser during the worst five days of their life. The first time you help organise a funeral you will no doubt find it baffling, terrifying, weird, overwhelming, devastating and incredibly important – this is not a good mixture.

At a time like this it is therefore a good idea to have others to turn to for support, and emotionally this may come in the form of friends and other family members, but you will also require practical support and this should come from your funeral home!

Chatting everything through with the funeral home is where it will all begin and although your relationship may be brief, it is important that they are there for you, so if you feel the company you have chosen is not for you, then change. It’s easy and you shouldn’t feel that you can’t do this.

On your first meeting there will be a lot of questions to ask:

  • Where do you want the service held?
  • What time should it be?
  • How many cars?
  • Cremation or burial?
  • Type off coffin?
  • Live music or taped?
  • Clothes for the deceased?
  • Will anyone be visiting the chapel of rest?
  • Order of service?
  • Flowers or donations?
  • Mounted photographs of the deceased?
  • Where will be reception be held?

There will probably be more… and all this at a time when you may well be feeling like your world has ended!

Be as comfortable as possible:
Ask the staff at the funeral home to visit you at your home when this meeting takes place. It really does help to do it this way, sitting in your own chair and drinking your own tea rather than sitting in an office.

You are not alone.
The death of a person you hold dear is one of the hardest things to have to face so you shouldn’t face it alone.
