A surfaced track connects the wooded and heathland areas of Thorndon North with the more open parkland of Thorndon South. The path runs through the Old Park, an area owned and managed as a traditional wood pasture by the Woodlands Trust. The park contains rare areas of heathland which are being carefully managed and restored in the most traditional and effective manner – by a hard-working herd of sheep and goats! It’s also a great place to spot a wide variety of butterflies, including some rarities, and the rangers run an extensive list of events throughout the year for all ages and interests. The short walk is on hard surface around a lake and is suitable for buggies and those with reduced mobility. The longer walk will include some rough surfaces which may be slippery in wet weather. Please ensure that you wear appropriate footwear. Please note there is a parking charge of £2.20 for the day at the Thorndon South car park.
How to get there:
From Brentwood town centre continue along the A128. Pass the turning for Thorndon North (The Avenue) on your right. Continue along the A128 and turn right into the Thorndon South car park. Approaching from the West on the A127, take the exit for the Halfway House Roundabout. Take the first exit into the A128 and shortly after turn left into Thorndon South.
By bus – The No. 151 runs from Brentwood town centre to Halfway House roundabout. A Sunday service, starting on 6 May, will provide access to Thorndon County Park North and South sites from the local communities of Doddinghurst, Herongate and Brentwood.
Brentwood Station is about 2 miles from the park.
